President participated in IAU conference and elected as board member

SMU’s President Wondwosen Tamrat (PhD) participated in the International Association of Universities’ (IAU) 16th General Conference held at the University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland, from October 25, 2022- October 28, 2022. The conference was dedicated to the theme ‘Relevance and Value of Universities to Future Society.’ During the event, Dr. Wondwosen was elected as a member of the Administrative Board of the Association for 2022-2026 representing the African region. []. In addition to him, the African region was represented by Prof Nana Amfo, Vice Chancellor of University of Ghana, Ghana; Prof. Sunungurai Dominica Chingarande, Vice-Chancellor of Women’s University in Africa, Zimbabwe; Jouhaina Gherib, Rector of Manouba University, Tunisia; and Prof Abdul- Rasheed Na’allah, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Nigeria.
The International Association of Universities, created under the auspices of UNESCO in 1950, is a membership-based organisation serving the global higher education community and gathers more than 600 Members (Institutions, Organisations, Affiliates and Associates) from over 120 countries. Chaired by its President, the Administrative Board of the IAU is made of twenty elected and two ex-officio members and serves for a period of four years. It meets annually and ensures that decisions of the General Conference are implemented and guides the work of the IAU Secretariat. Some of its work is carried out through specific committees and working groups.

Bahir Dar University and Debre Tabor University from Ethiopia also participated in the conference represented by their presidents and other delegates. Dr Wondwosen’s participation was facilitated by the IAU through sponsorship provided by the Irish Aid. SMU congratulates the president on his election and thanks the IAU and Irish Aid for facilitating his travel and stay in Dublin.
