The Institute of Quality and Productivity Management (IQPM) at St. Mary’s University was established with the objective of integrating advanced modern methodologies and technologies to prepare a generation of high-quality professionals that will be qualified according to the needs of the market and with the capabilities to cope with the changing challenges.

The interest in higher education towards quality and productivity management in developing countries is a necessity imposed by the changes that have occurred in most societies all over the world. A few examples of the major changes include   globalization of the economy, lack of resources, lack of qualified workers, and inefficient educational management system.

More than ever, businesses need ways to improve their operations to better gain, serve, and retain customers, while reducing costs and improving margins. Implementing quality management systems and attaining third-party accredited certification can help businesses achieve success on all of these fronts.

In response to the growing demand for training and education in quality and productivity, St. Mary’s University has established a quality management program that commenced on 01 January, 2014 with the purpose of formulating a sound program for the development of education and training in quality and productivity management, and eventually established an autonomous unit, “The Institute of Quality and Productivity Management”. IQPM offers a wide range of training programs across a diverse spectrum of subjects.

Total Quality Management (TQM) that has been adopted as a management paradigm by many organizations worldwide is inevitably a common factor that will shape the strategies in an attempt to maintain the sustainable development of the economy.

In the current situation in Ethiopia, quality and productivity problems along the supply-chain have culminated into low quality and below potential levels of production, leading to consumer dissatisfaction and low export earnings. Eventually, Ethiopia’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Regional Economic Integration has a number of implications to the existing situation of the country as the accession and import-export trade would require that enterprises market their products under competitive conditions. To this effect, IQPM is working towards building the crucially important capacity of existing suppliers in a bid to improve their efficiency and productivity. This, in turn, involves the public and private sectors to take measures aimed at increasing their competitiveness through increased quality and productivity.
