What you need to know about the Ethiopian Higher Education Exit Exam (HEEE)

What an Exit Exam is: 

 Sometimes known as an end of course test, an exit exam refers to a specific form of assessment used by higher education institutions in order to examine the basic level of education obtained by prospective graduates and fulfill the requirements necessary to graduate 

 It is supposed to measure the learning outputs of a program as a whole not the 

individual courses 

 It is a comprehensive exam that a student is required to pass in order to complete a program of study. 

 It serves as a graduation requirement. 

International and local experiences 

 Exit exams in the US are run by individual institutions on voluntary basis 

 In United Arab Emirates (UAE)engineering students are required to take exit exam in accordance with standards established by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). 

 In Germany they have what they call the Staatsexamen which is a government licensing examination that future doctors, teachers, pharmacists, food chemists, psychotherapists and jurists have to pass to be allowed to work in their profession. 

 India has a similar test administered in the field of medical education. 

 Ethiopia started offering exit exam to graduates in the field of Law in 2010 

Objectives of HEEE: 

 To Ensure that all first-degree graduates meet the graduate profile the curriculum 

 To produce skilled and competent manpower to local, national and international market 

 To create conducive environment for stakeholders ‘proper engagement in graduates’ competency assessment 

 To assess students’ educational achievement in students’ major area of program study 

Benefits of HEEE: 

 Improves student achievement, learning outcome and quality of education 

 Improves students ‘subsequent labor market performance by serving as a quality monitoring tool in the form of certification of competence for employ mentor as a common gateway to attain a license to the world of work 

 Provide useful information to universities on the overall quality of their system with the ensuing incentive of prioritizing high-quality instruction. 

 Useful in instituting a system of accountability and transparency where students, instructors, HEIs, and academic leaders can be measured for their success or failure based on student outcome 

 Useful as source of information for policy decisions at national level 

Who sits for the HEEE? 

 Students enrolled in undergraduate programs at public and private higher education institutions starting from those who complete their studies by 2015EC. 

Who will Administer the HEEE? 

 The Ethiopian Ministry of Education will take the key role in the administration of the national higher education exit exam 

When will the HEEE be administered? 

 The exam will be given annually. The first exam is planned to be administered at the end of June 2023 or Sene2015EC 

What is expected from students? 

 Obeying the rules and regulations set nationally for the implementation of HEEE 

 Developing the appropriate academic and psychological preparation 

 Cultivating a culture of inquiry and constant reading 

 Strictly following SMU programs planned toward preparing students for HEEE 

 Searching for relevant information related to HEEE from SMU platforms and other sources 

 Giving special attention to courses planned to be tested 

 Following up and responding positively to the institutional directions provided regularly by SMU 

 Undertaking other responsibilities given by the University, respective departments and instructors
