St. Mary’s University Library was established in 1998 to serve as center for collection, processing, storage and distribution of information and knowledge resources in print and electronic formats to enhance the teaching-learning process, research, and public service and meet the goals of the university through provision of up-to-date information.
The Library supports the mission of the University in producing competent graduates by enriching collections of the libraries through the provision of access to information and services to support teaching, learning, research and community services.
The library aspires to be a model for the best academic library that brings people and information together in an innovative way.
Duties and responsibilities
- To this end, the library strives to accomplish the following major tasks:
- Work toward ensuring that plans and targets of the University are fulfilled;
- Plan, administer and safeguard the print and electronic materials of the University;
- Ensure the smooth running of the library service in line with the aims and objectives of the University;
- Develop and manage collections;
- Identify and provide learning resources to instructors, researchers, and students;
- Manage available resources efficiently and economically;
- Establish a conducive study environment which caters to the interests of library users;
- Train staff members and other library users to develop their information service skills for efficient and effective utilization of information resources;
- Carry out appropriate development work in the library with the aim of improving the library’s multi-purpose services;
- Maintain effective links with domestic and international educational institutions;
- Work towards continuous growth and development of the University.
The SMU library has organized collection of information resources accessible to students as well as academic and administrative staff members. The library’s collection includes books, journals, periodicals, policy documents in hard copies and in other forms such as e-books, e journals, and databases to support the teaching-learning process and research endeavors and to respond to the needs of the entire university community. The library system has three libraries located at different sites. The two libraries located at the Undergraduate Campus mainly serve students from the undergraduate programs of Business, Accounting and Finance, Informatics and Tourism and Hospitality Management. The Graduate School library, located at the Main Campus, off-Roosevelt Street, provides services to graduate school students and distance learners. The Library takes up the whole length of the ground floor of the graduate school Building and has become the Main Library. The University has so far managed to avail mini-libraries at a substantial number of the University’s distance learning coordinating centers to create easy access to learning resource for those pursuing their education through distance mode of learning.
Inter-Library Loan Services
SMU libraries provide inter-library loan services that facilitate borrowing and lending resources within SMU libraries and libraries of other institutions.
The SMU library has free online catalogues, full-text journals, articles, abstracts, reviews, theses and catalogue databases to the university community wherever they are and whenever they need it. To exploit e-resources, you can visit the library or the university web-site at ‘www.Library.smuc.edu.et’ or “www.smuc.edu.et”. You may browse the web-site at ‘www.repository.smuc.edu.et’ to access the theses.
The library has also secured online services of electronic resources that are available through HINARI, AGORA and OARE and from the American based research archive-JSTOR (www.jstor.org), African Journal Online (www.ajol.info), and Heinonline (www.heinonline.org). Students enrolled in the MBA in Entrepreneurship can enjoy the rich collections of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan.
Access and Usage
The library has general information, service standards, procedures, manuals and policies on the use of facilities and collections. Please read the following paragraphs to learn about access and usage of SMU library and related resources.
Periodicals are among the most valuable assets in the libraries as they are publications that contain up-to-date information. They serve as valuable research supplement to the other materials found in the libraries. SMU has collections of periodicals which are accessible to students and staff alike.
The UL operates in a closed and open access systems. SMUL houses monographs, print journals, magazines and audiovisual collections. The UL has also access to online e-resources (full-text, journals documents, reviews, abstracts, and databases). In addition to these, digital off-line resources and CD-ROMs are also available in the library.
The SMUL uses both traditional and OPAC catalogues as its principal gateways to all its collections.
The libraries have a circulation desk where the library staff will assist users to check-out library materials. The library staff members also recall and trace items which users cannot find in the stack and answer questions about circulation policy and issuance of borrowing cards.

The University library actively works in partnership with Addis Ababa University, Civil Service University, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa library, African Union library, National Archives and Libraries Agency, Ethiopian Management Institution, Ethiopia Economic Association, Forum for Social Studies, the Institute of Agricultural Research Library and the International Livestock Research Institute.
SMUL is open for 12 hours a day from 8:00AM – 8:00PM (Monday-Saturday) and 9 hours on Sundays from 8:00AM – 5:00PM, except for public holidays.
