St.Mary's University

The Students’ Support and Services Office, headed by a Dean and reporting to the EVP, works in collaboration with all departments and offices of St. Mary’s University (SMU) to realize the vision and mission of the University. The office is responsible for all student support units, such as Guidance and Counselling, Student Wellness, and the Students’ Union through student engagement.  It liaises between students and SMU in particular and the outside community in general.

Vision, Mission, Values and Goals

The vision, mission, values and goals of dean of students are extensions of the vision, mission, values and goals as an integral body of SMU, it plays a major role in shaping the future success of the university and the students. It is with a tremendous amount of pride and dedication that it pursues its vision, mission, values and goals.

Vision

The SSSO strives to be a highly productive students’ support office that contributes greatly to the attainment of the vision of the university, by giving students support in issues that arise when they are in SMU.

Mission

The mission of SSSO is to enable students to complete their course of study most effectively, through orientation, advising, counselling, tutorials, health services, extracurricular and most student centered activities.

General Duties and Responsibilities of SSSO

  • Advocate for students
  • Organize orientation for new students
  • Organize students’ day (welcome events)
  • Organize farewell events
  • Provide students general information related to rules, regulations, procedures etc. of SMU
    • During orientation
    • On Thursday  Coffee Ceremony Talk Show program
    • During Question and Answer Competition
  • Collaborate with other offices of SMU to enhance services that meet the needs of students
  • Give support to students that live with visible and invisible disabilities
    • When the schedule is prepared the office is  made aware of any physical disability of  student/s it will make sure that the classes of the student are on the lower level of the building;
    • In collaboration with the Library and Documentation Office fetch books to the  student/s with physical disability
    • Support student/s with invisible disability according to their needs as much as it’s possible for SMU
  • Provide tutorials on major, supportive courses and the English Language
    • Department heads, instructor and/or students inform the Dean of SSSO when a need arises for tutorial services.

  • The office, in collaboration with the Department of Basic Courses, assists students to develop their English communication, oral presentation and writing skills.
  • Creates platforms to respond to students’ grievances and handles their appeals by arranging meetings to address issues with the pertinent body.

Student Wellness Unit

Reporting to the Dean of SSSO, the unit is responsible for facilitating and organizing recreation, cultural activities, sports, career assistance, job placement, social welfare, etc. It also organizes discussion forums on topical issues like HIV/AIDS.  In consultation and collaboration with SSSO, it coordinates New Students’ Orientation Programs so that students would be acquainted with the policy of the University and relevant offices. In particular the office is involved in:

Guidance and Counseling Unit

The Guidance and Counseling Unit was established in 2005 under SSSO to enhance student-learning outcomes. Counseling Services include assistance with educational and career counseling as well as personal problems, and with learning effective coping skills related to emotional conflict, interpersonal relations, and human sexuality. Assistance is available on a “drop-in” basis or by appointment.

First Aid Clinic

The Unit pays special attention to students’ physical and health care, cleaning campaigns and organize female led discussions on health issues with the girls club.

Student Union

The Student Union is a body elected by and representing students to speak for and facilitate students’ needs in collaboration with the SSSO and the other pertinent offices under it.

Specifically,

  • It encourages students’ active membership to the various clubs in the university.
  • Provides information to the SSSO to facilitate students need in collaboration with the class representatives.
  • Organizes various on campus events for the students experience sharing.
  • Represents students in and out of campus activities.
  • Facilitates the students’ graduation related activities.
