The Speech and Debate Club of SMU was conceived and established by students to be one of the extra-curricular activities on campus. It helps students develop their communication skills and allows students an environment to learn how to better express their ideas, opinions, and feelings in a formal way. In addition to this, students learn reasoning and formulating and presenting evidence-based arguments. This helps them develop a more extroverted and articulated manner of speaking, as well as a strong sense of self-confidence. These goals are accomplished through training, different speech competitions and tournaments, as well as debates and discussions on various issues. The Club has a vision of becoming a model platform to promote speech and debate activities, thereby arming students with speaking skills, teamwork, critical thinking, and creativity which are required to succeed in higher education institutes.
