St. Mary’s University (SMU) held a grand graduation ceremony on August 3, 2024, at the Ethiopia National Theater, celebrating the achievements of both postgraduate and undergraduate students.

The ceremony was officially opened by Ato Tedla Haile, Executive Vice President of St. Mary’s University, who delivered the opening remarks. He began his speech by congratulating the graduates on the successful accomplishment of their studies. In his speech, he praised the graduates and the university community for their hard work and dedication and the families who supported them throughout their educational journey.

He highlighted the significance of the day, emphasizing that the university’s commitment to education has resulted in the successful graduation of 388 postgraduate and 156 undergraduate students.

He expressed his pride in the university’s contributions over the past 25 years to education, research and community services. He underscored the university’s role in empowering graduates to serve the nation and their respective institutions they are to join with integrity and excellence.

There is significant progress in female participation, with 210 female graduates in the postgraduate program, making up 54.1% of the total, and 74 female graduates in the undergraduate program, accounting for 48.4%, he added. This marks a substantial achievement in gender inclusivity and highlights the university’s commitment to empowering women through higher education.

The ceremony was a culmination of years of dedication, hard work, and commitment to academic excellence by both students and the institution. As the graduates step into the next chapter of their lives, St. Mary’s University remains committed to promoting an environment of learning, growth, and service to the community, Ato Tedla indicated.

The centerpiece of the program was the recognition of students who graduated with distinction in a variety of fields. These outstanding achievers were celebrated, with certificates and trophies presented to outstanding performers by the guest of honor.

At the 2024 graduation ceremony, Dr. Selam Aklilu, Founder and CEO of First Spine Clinic, delivered an inspiring closing speech where she urged the graduates to pursue their goals with unwavering determination and resilience. Her message emphasized on the importance of connecting “one’s breath with the mind”, which is the basis for leading a healthy life. She called upon the graduates to pay attention to addressing both their emotional and physical well-being.

She encouraged the graduates to maintain a positive attitude in every aspect of their lives, fostering a mindset that embraces growth. Her words resonated deeply with the audience, offering valuable insights on personal development and leaving a lasting impact on the new graduates as they embark on their next journey.
